Singer Susan Boyle recently found herself in hot water when she had an outburst at a restaurant in London. Reportedly, Susan snapped and shouted at one of the employees of the restaurant. However, it turns out Susan had someone else as the target of her ire – her assistant, who apparently told Susan that she needed to go on a diet and lose some weight. Um, not cool, assistant. I’m struggling to find a reason why anyone would tell their boss to go on a diet – even if you think that, why would you ever say it to the person who has the authority to fire you? Most celebrity assistant jobs involve being a bit of a yes man or yes woman, and I find it incredibly surprising that an assistant would ever tell their celebrity boss “you need to lose weight.” Entertainment Lawyer, as usual, has a pretty good theory – that the assistant was passing along a message from a manager or agent or someone else who wanted to pressure Susan about her looks. Sadly, it’s not at all uncommon for the people responsible for managing a famous person’s career to give the celebrity unsolicited ‘advice’ about how to dress/look, even to the point where they encourage them to diet.
That said, Susan apologized for her outburst, and let’s hope this is the last we hear of it.
2009 has been an interesting year in assistantland. Here are some facts and figures:
The most popular post of 2009 was actually a post from 2008 – the post where I announced that Kathy Griffin’s first assistant, Jessica Zacijek, was leaving her job. The #2 and #3 posts were from this year, and they were also about the Jessica/Kathy situation.
The most popular tag of 2009 was “Office Politics.”
The most popular category of 2009 was, as it has been every other year since the site launched, “Horror Stories.” Refresh your memory with the story of the office Halloween grinch and a boss who earned the nickname Miranda Priestly 2.0.
The most popular celebrity of 2009, after Kathy Griffin of course, was Christian Bale. His former assistant Harrison Cheung’s tell-all to the Mirror and the story about Bale’s wife being the former assistant to Winona Ryder made him a popular guy on STA. The gratuitous hot photos probably didn’t hurt his ranking, either.
The most controversial post of 2009, by a landslide, was a post about Susan Boyle getting her very own assistant. Some really militant Susan Boyle fans – some of whom had the same IP address – thought it was impertinent of me to suggest that Susan should be nice to her assistant.
As for my own personal favorites, my new favorite tag is “Post Ideas from My Mom.” My mom is a regular reader of the site and occasionally sends me links to things she thinks I should write about here. Lots of them end up on the site, such as this story about a secretary who got fired for eating the boss’ sandwich and this post about a Texas office who adopted a cat as their mascot.
Thanks for a great 2009, and I look forward to an even better 2010.
How do you tell when a celebrity has really hit the big time? Is it when they’re on the cover of People magazine? Maybe the first time they’re invited to Diddy’s White Party?
I’d venture a guess that a celebrity is really famous when he or she gets a personal assistant. So in that case, let’s now welcome Susan Boyle to the big-star table. The Scottish woman who turned into a YouTube sensation when she sang “I Dreamed A Dream” on Britain’s Got Talent has been coping with the effects of fame. She’s going on tour, has had to learn how to use a cell phone for the first time in her life, is purchasing the house she’s been renting for years, and has a brand-new PA named Julia. With help from Julia and her mentor Simon Cowell, Susan is also recording her first album.
As long as you’re nice to your assistant, Susan, I won’t have to say anything mean about you on this blog. But you’ve been warned.
