Maybe Meghan McCain should move to Japan and work for Hime and Company – she thinks that it’s totally acceptable to miss work if you’re dealing with a breakup. Although she was scheduled to make a speaking engagement, she reportedly blew it off to go to Vegas with her girlfriends following a big breakup. She wrote about it on The Daily Beast:
Last September, my boyfriend broke up with me over a five-line email. I had a speaking engagement at Juniata College, but that would have to wait. I cancelled the speech and fled to Vegas for a girl’s weekend. I was at the blackjack table at the Bellagio when one of my girlfriends told me the Internet was going crazy. What now? “Meghan McCain Blows Off Book Tour to Party in Vegas,” declared Gawker. The Chronicle of Higher Education weighed in with, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas—unless you’re arrogant enough to post it to your Twitter feed.” It wasn’t so much that I had cancelled a speaking engagement. It was that I was in Vegas instead.
Now, if only the rest of us could get away with that at work.
Radaronline seems to think so. They have photos of newly-single Christina Aguilera out with a guy identified as Matthew Rutler, a set assistant who worked on her movie Burlesque. The pair reportedly went out on a double date in L.A. with Nicole Richie and Joel Madden. If they really are a couple and not just a tabloid invention, I hope Matthew doesn’t sell Christina out in a paid interview a la Amy Winehouse and Alex Haines.
Danny McBride, aka Kenny Powers on Eastbound and Down (the show every dude in my life is obsessed with) talked to Nerve.com to give sex advice to some of their erstwhile readers. Among his deep thoughts:
I hooked up with my coworker while drunk at an office party, but I’m not interested in dating her. What should I do now?
Kind of too late. You already took a shit where you eat, homeboy. That’s not a good thing. Just ride out the awkwardness. See how weird it’ll get, and maybe she’ll quit. Make things weirder. Push it a little. Maybe send flowers to her from an anonymous person. Just start coming off like a stalker.
It’s nice to know that he and I agree on something.
Beth Ditto, lead singer of The Gossip and fashion icon, left her longtime partner and is now dating her assistant, Kristen. The out and proud lesbian told British Marie Claire that she and Kristen are so serious they’ve even talked about having a baby. Though Beth’s 29, she’s already planning ahead, and said she’d like to get pregnant when she’s 37. Obviously, my brain went here:
Rapper The Dream is married to singer Christina Milian, and the couple has a young daughter named Violet. However, US Weekly got photos of The Dream in the Caribbean with another woman, who turned out to be his personal assistant, Melissa Santiago. While it’s normal for PAs to travel with their bosses, it’s pretty clear from these photos that she was not only there to help with his scheduling and taking phone messages. Milian’s rep has since announced that the couple is separated and will be divorcing.
Remember our old friend Kate Major – the one who quit her job at Star magazine because she fell in love with her story subject, Jon “Ick. Nast.” Gosselin and reportedly agreed to work as his personal assistant? Rather than disappear completely, Kate has chosen to stay around and make my life more enjoyable with her wacky antics. Once she and Jon were over, Kate hightailed it over to Jon’s best frenemy, Michael Lohan. Now the gruesome twosome have moved to LA together and are getting married. How can this story possibly get more absurd, you ask? Well, Popeater now claims that Kate used to be Lindsay’s (as in, Michael’s daughter) personal assistant several years ago. Lindsay is reportedly not at all happy to have Kate as her new stepmom and, for once, I totally agree with her. So, let’s see if we can reconstruct the Kate Major timeline…
- Lives in LA
- Works as Lindsay Lohan’s assistant
- Moves to New York
- Works for Star
- Leaves Star, Gosselin fiasco
- Hooks up with Michael Lohan
- Back to LA
- Now.
Something about all of this seems totally off. Now, I like a good conspiracy theory, so here’s mine: this entire thing, start to finish, was planned by Kate and Michael. Maybe they got together when Kate was working for Lindsay, and Lindsay was (rightly) grossed out by her dad hooking up with her assistant and fired Kate. Michael, who has lots of celebrity magazine connections thanks to his career of selling stories about his kid for a living, called in a favor and got Kate a job at Star. They kept seeing each other in secret and when she realized they could make names for themselves by aligning themselves with tabloid magnet Jon Gosselin, they used him as a pawn in their scheme. Man, this is brilliant. And terrifying. I think I need to step away from the computer for awhile.
Hell hath no fury like a woman cheated on, particularly when the woman in question is a beautiful actress with access to your work contact list. Actress Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon found out that her husband, CAA agent Mike Nilon, had been keeping a mistress for the last five years. Rather than try to kill him, she got a much sweeter revenge: she sent an angry email outing her cheating husband to every single agent at CAA. One of them, in turn, forwarded the email to the New York Post.
The e-mail says,”I found out today that MY husband of almost 9 yrs has been having an affair for 5 yrs with some slut in Chicago. I am devastated!!!! And I have been duped!! Our boys don’t deserve this!”
Normally, when a famous person dates a celebrity assistant it’s a male celebrity and a female assistant (cases in point: Christian Bale and Sibi Blazic, Alejandro Sanz and Raquel Pereda, etc), which is a power differential I’ve never been entirely comfortable with. However, according to the New York Daily News, actress Rachel McAdams might be doing her part to buck the patriarchal trend. She’s reportedly dating Ben Jackson, a former model and the personal assistant to her Sherlock Holmes costar Jude Law. Sadly, the paper does not have any photos of said former model, but if I can get my hands on some I will definitely be posting them later.
When crazypants Kate Major, who left her job at Star magazine to date reality “star” and father of eight Jon Gosselin, I thought she was completely making up her story that Jon offered to hire her as his personal assistant. However, it seems I owe Ms. Major an apology: in a lawsuit against Gosselin by TLC, the network that aired Jon and Kate Plus Eight and claims he violated his contract with them, one piece of evidence is a handwritten employment agreement between the two. In the document, Gosselin says he will pay Major the same amount of money she was making at her previous job to be his assistant. According to today’s New York Daily News:
The secret contract, dated July 28, 2009, reads: “I, Jon Gosselin, will employ Kate Major as a personal assistant,” pledging to give her “some but not all future accounts.”
Gosselin also wrote that “she will receive a percentage of accounts for payment based upon involvement.”
Major also promised in the newly revealed document, to “run any media inquiries past Jon Gosselin before doing any on-air or print work.” She likewise pledged to give Jon approval over questions and to exclude questions he nixed.
Major has been subpoenaed to testify in the case. This is getting good. I wonder if TLC will summon Michael Lohan as well?
In the movie 500 Days of Summer, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (full disclosure: I’ve had a crush on this dude since Ten Things I Hate About You) believes he’s found his dream girl when Zooey Deschanel starts working as his boss’ assistant. There’s one hitch: Zooey’s character doesn’t believe true love is possible. The movie is surprisingly sweet, and it’s a great counterpart to that other movie Gordon-Levitt is in this summer (a little project called GI Joe). Check out the trailer:
