Although the US doesn’t have this phenomenon, it’s common for students in the UK and Australia to take a year off between high school and college. That year is known as a “gap year,” and students do anything from backpack around the world to work to save money for school. Princess Beatrice, the daughter of Prince Andrew and Duchess of York Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson, has any number of options for her gap year. However, instead of going to fancy parties or traveling to exotic locales, the 19-year-old royal has chosen to spend part of the year working as a shop assistant in the popular London department store Selfridge’s.
We approve of Beatrice’s decision to mingle with the commoners, and hope there’s some assistant-related activism in her future.
