rachel mcadams dating assistant?

Normally, when a famous person dates a celebrity assistant it’s a male celebrity and a female assistant (cases in point: Christian Bale and Sibi Blazic, Alejandro Sanz and Raquel Pereda, etc), which is a power differential I’ve never been entirely comfortable with. However, according to the New York Daily News, actress Rachel McAdams might be doing her part to buck the patriarchal trend. She’s reportedly dating Ben Jackson, a former model and the personal assistant to her Sherlock Holmes costar Jude Law. Sadly, the paper does not have any photos of said former model, but if I can get my hands on some I will definitely be posting them later.

bette midler’s daughter is a PA

There are so many celebrity cameos in the upcoming second Sex and the City movie – Liza Minnelli, Penelope Cruz, Miley Cyrus – that when Bette Midler showed up on the set, nobody was surprised. However, the Divine Miss M wasn’t there to tape a scene. She was there to visit her daughter Sophie, who worked a stint as a production assistant on the movie. “It was a big thrill for her,” Midler told E! Online. “[Sophie] had a great time. She loves the business.”

Some internet searching makes me kind of love Sophie – she graduated from Yale, where she majored in Sociology and learned to speak fluent Mandarin. How many celebrity kids not only go to college but enjoy learning? Plus she and her mom look super cute together.

even vampires need assistants

Did you ever read R.L. Stine books when you were a kid? I did, and the trailer for the upcoming movie Cirque de Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant gave me a lot of Goosebumps flashbacks. While the premise is kind of flimsy – a kid who is bored with his life agrees to become an apprentice vampire – it looks like a lot of fun. John C. Reilly plays the vampire who teaches his young pupil how to suck blood properly, and Salma Hayek and 30 Rock’s Jane Kacmarek both appear as members of the titular “Cirque.” The movie comes out, obviously, just in time for Halloween.

the sta review: ‘post grad’

Last night I went to see the new Alexis Bledel movie Post Grad with a friend. The movie stars the former Gilmore Girl as Ryden, an overachiever who has planned out her entire life already. So far, she’s checked high school and college off her list of achievements, and the next item is landing an assistant job at “the most prestigious publishing company in Los Angeles” (I smothered a couple of laughs at that one). When the job goes to her college rival instead, Ryden has to deal with what happens when your big plans don’t work out the way you wanted.

the sta review: ‘outsourced’

Recently, Netflix noticed I’d been watching lots of workplace movies (or just renting 9 to 5 constantly, I’m not sure which) and recommended a film called Outsourced. The movie is about a guy named Todd (Josh Hamilton) whose tedious customer service job gets outsourced to India. In exchange for losing his job, he is given the chance to go to India and oversee/train the new employees of the call center.

zac efron to play assistant?

Robert Rave’s “novel” Spin isn’t even on sale until tomorrow, but there are already talks of turning it into a feature film. The book, which Rave swears isn’t based on experiences working for his former boss Lizzie Grubman, seems to be on its way to becoming The Devil Wears Prada, 2.0. Unlike Prada, though, the book has a male protagonist, Taylor. He’s a perfect assistant lit cliche – young, wide-eyed, Midwestern, and with aspirations to make it big in New York City. Who could play the role? Some sources claim that High School Musical star Zac Efron is up for the part. This could be a smart move for the teen idol – after all, Prada helped its assistant portrayer Anne Hathaway become a star. It could also help him shed his squeaky clean image – Spin contains plenty of sex, drugs, and blackmail.

The thing I really care about, though, is who will play nightmare PR boss “Jennie.” Jennie is described in the book as being overtanned, coked-up, entitled, and abusive. Perhaps Maya Rudolph as Donatella Versace? Heather Locklear in Amanda Woodward mode? Or maybe this could be the perfect comeback role for Tara Reid…

advice from a favorite fake assistant

It’s certainly an odd movie to claim taught me something about the workplace, but Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, the great ’90s movie starring Christina Applegate when she was still best known for being Kelly Bundy, actually gave me a really useful piece of work advice. When Applegate’s character, Sue Ellen, fakes a resume and gets a job as an assistant at a fashion company, her boss, Rose, teaches her an incredibly useful phrase: I’m right on top of that, Rose. Sue Ellen learns to use that phrase anytime it needs to look like she’s working on something or a higher-up wants to know how a project is going. Sue Ellen may not even know what the hell they’re asking about, but she sure as hell will claim to be “on top of it.”

While the movie is completely unrealistic, that notion of saying you’re doing something when you don’t have any plans to do so is a pretty common office phenomenon. At my first assistant job, I used “I’m right on top of that, [Evil Boss' Name],” all the time. My boss, who was in his 70s and had no idea that I was quoting a movie to him, would always seem satisfied with my answer.

This line is also incredibly useful with your parents, your neat freak roommate, your professor, or anyone else who is trying to make you behave like an adult when you don’t want to. Are you done with that term paper? I’m right on top of that, Professor Rose. Are you planning to come home for Christmas? I’m right on top of that, Mama Rose. See? It really is perfect. Thanks for that, Christina Applegate.

one hell of an assistant job

In the French film L’assistant (“The Assistant”), an elderly woman sets out to find herself a personal assistant. However, she’s not looking for someone to help her run errands or answer phones – she’s trying to a person she trusts enough to help her end her life peacefully. Be warned – this clip is powerful and very intense (It’s in French with English subtitles.)

assistant love in the ’summer’

In the movie 500 Days of Summer, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (full disclosure: I’ve had a crush on this dude since Ten Things I Hate About You) believes he’s found his dream girl when Zooey Deschanel starts working as his boss’ assistant. There’s one hitch: Zooey’s character doesn’t believe true love is possible. The movie is surprisingly sweet, and it’s a great counterpart to that other movie Gordon-Levitt is in this summer (a little project called GI Joe). Check out the trailer:

lindsay lohan’s workplace movie airs

Labor Pains, the straight-to-TV movie that was once heralded as Lindsay Lohan’s big comeback, will be airing on ABC Family, the same network responsible for Secret Life of the American Teenager. I think they’re trying to give Lifetime a run for their “young pregnant chicks” entertainment stronghold.

In the movie, LiLo plays a beleaguered assistant whose boss (Chris Parnell) hates her and wants to fire her, when suddenly she comes up with the ‘brilliant’ idea to fake a pregnancy in order to keep her job. (Hmmm…who else gets knocked up to ensure job security?) The movie also features ex-assistant Cheryl Hines as a concerned coworker.
