i pity karl lagerfeld’s assistant

“Karl is like a dad. I’ve known him since I was 16 – I would do a lot for Karl. I was once on his plane flying to China. He wouldn’t stop talking. After a while, I said to him, ‘I have to sleep now Karl.’ When I woke up 10 hours later he was still talking to some poor assistant!”

gerard butler’s assistant has another boss

“I went to my fridge the other day and was so angry there was no bread. I called my assistant and said, “what happened to the bread?” She said, “Your trainer told me to take it!”

alber elbaz is my hero

“The people I chose to run my new store in London are nice. I cannot work with b*****s, I can’t, I can’t. Maybe I am too sensitive, I get blocked. There are some people who don’t give a damn. With me, I find that if there is no energy flowing or no connection, I can’t think. Talent is amazing — I love it, appreciate it. I respect talent a lot. But if you ask me, ‘Talent and b***h, or less talent and good?’ I’ll go with less talent.”

wise words from… jimmy fallon?

It’s graduation season, and that also means it’s time for celebrities to speak at college commencements around the country. Jimmy Fallon, who dropped out of the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY fourteen years ago in order to try his luck in comedy returned to his alma mater to finally pick up his degree and address his fellow graduates. I waver on whether I think the dude is actually funny (although anyone married to Nancy Junoven can’t be that bad), but I did enjoy this quote from his speech:

Have you guys seen that movie The Graduate? Well, the real world is nothing like that movie. When you leave here today, your parents’ hot friend will not try to have sex with you.

Good point. And I don’t know if any of my parents’ friends would be classified as hot anyway, so I’m not particularly saddened by this revelation.

michelle obama talks assistants

From the Washington Post:

First lady Michelle Obama called her “current life” in the White House “a very blessed situation, because I have what most families don’t have — tons of support all around, not just my mother, but staff and administration. I have a chief of staff and a personal assistant, and everyone needs that.”

“Everyone should have a chief of staff and a set of personal assistants,” Obama said with a laugh as she spoke before a crowd of business executives meeting today during a “Corporate Voices for Working Families” conference at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington.

Oh, Michelle, I know that you are the living embodiment of awesome, and thanks for a) acknowledging how lucky you are to have assistants who help you, and b) how assistants have hard jobs and deserve praise for what they do.

bart simpson learns about work

Oh, we all remember starting our first job, then ripping open our first paycheck while dreaming of all the cool stuff we’re going to buy with the money and then … the inevitable disappointment when you see how much you make after taxes. In this vintage Simpsons clip, Bart gets his first job doing chores for an old lady:

an opening thought for monday

“Oh, you hate your job? Why didn’t you say so? There’s a support group for that. It’s called EVERYBODY, and they meet at the bar.”

wise words from michael scott

There’s always a distance between a boss and the employees, its just nature’s rule. It’s intimidation mostly. It’s the awareness that they are not me.
