Hey all - STA is featured in a really great article on Fortune.com today. You can check it out here, and check out the full text of the horror story they excerpt (it’s one of my all-time favorites) here.

Administrative Professionals’ Day is tomorrow! My lips are sealed, but I promise some cool things for tomorrow. However, because a day is not enough to praise assistants for all they do, the whole week is now Administrative Professionals’ Week. Here are a couple of links you should check out as you prep for the big day:
- Shameless self-promotion: I wrote a humorous guide for bosses on the Huffington Post.
- Have your boss enter you in this Administrative Professionals’ Day contest (prizes include $1,000 and a cocktail reception for you and your coworker)
- If your boss isn’t getting you a present, feel free to show him or her this depressing press release that reveals (shocking!) admins are doing even more work than usual these days.
- And even if your boss isn’t buying you anything, two awesome food things are happening today: free cones from Ben & Jerry’s, and 50 cent coffee from Dunkin Donuts. For the big day tomorrow, assistants get free strawberry lemonade at O’Charley’s. Plus, if you live in Alabama, you can sign up for the Typewriter Toss at Ruth’s Chris Steak House.
If you haven’t checked out the Web series Temp Life, I totally recommend it. The clever, sometimes heartbreaking show deals with the ins and outs of terrible temp jobs. Permatemps Mark and Laura get sent on various assignments by their ‘boss,’ Nick (played by the show’s creator, Wilson Cleveland). In this episode, the first of the show’s third season, Laura suggests that Mark might want to post his workplace horror story on a certain website you may have heard of. Check it out:
Also, I was wearing a yellow cardigan when I watched this episode. True story.
I’ll confess: when I first moved to New York, one of my dreams was to be mentioned in the New York Post’s famous Page Six column. So, does being quoted in a story in Page Six magazine count? You decide.
This morning STA got a massive compliment- Marie Claire chose the site as their Blog Crush of the Week. Let’s return the favor by checking out this Marie Claire assistant video. Thanks, ladies!
Hey all. I’m heading back to the Tarheel State for the holidays, but before I cut out for the next couple of days I wanted to let you know that STA - and I - got a nice mention in today’s New York Post. It’s in an article about being forced to lie on the job, something which plenty of assistants know all about.
Thanks to STA reader Maggie, who informed me that we got a shoutout in today’s edition of the New York and Philadelphia Metros. The article, featuring an interview with Vicky Oliver (the author of Bad Bosses, Crazy Coworkers, and Other Office Idiots), gives practical tips on how to cope with evil bosses and credit-stealing coworkers. I was hugely flattered that one of the tips on dealing with a boss who bullies you is to threaten him or her that you’re going to post your horror story on STA. Those of you in New York or Philadelphia can pick up a free paper copy near your subway entrance (article’s on pages 14-15). Post online links in the comments.
Certain things are universal. You will have to pay taxes even when you make no money, you will always get guilted by your parents even when you are a functioning adult with a family of your own, and the general public will continue to be shocked and amazed that some people treat their assistants like shit. Now, it seems the people of Ireland have been clued in on this trend, as they quoted Lilit in their article about the weird world of celebrity PAs.
Don’t you need more reasons to take a mental health day? Lilit got interviewed for this article on Asylum.com about the fine art of faking sick, an idea she’s been obsessed with since first viewing Ferris Bueller.
Guidespot.com, which is a New York-based “how to” website that gives tips on everything from making a home office to not giving in to the junk food lying around at the office. Now, they’re providing tools for beleaguered assistants, with an emphasis on the NYC area, including bars with good happy hours and links to helpful time-saving websites like OpenTable, free online solitaire (courtesy of The Office, and the cast members’ faces are on the cards) and…hmm…some blog called Save the Assistants. It also includes the following quote from Mad Men, which I am surprised hasn’t already made it onto this site:
What they really want is a cross between their mother and a waitress.
