the soundtrack to your office

A new study conducted in England claims that happy, upbeat music helps you be more productive at work. Study author Professor Richard McGregor suggests a song like Whistle While You Work to boost the mood around the office. What we found infinitely more interesting was his list of songs you shouldn’t have in your head at work. We’ve listed his, plus a couple of our own, below. Leave your own suggestions in the comments–maybe we’ll make an STA mixtape.

  • “I Don’t Like Mondays,” the Boomtown Rats (or the Tori Amos cover)
  • “Work is a Four Letter Word,” Cilla Black
  • “Fight the Power,” Public Enemy
  • “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now,” the Smiths
  • “Nine to Five,” Dolly Parton
  • “Take This Job And Shove It,” Johnny Paycheck
  • “I Hate You So Much Right Now,” Kelis
  • “Minimum Wage,” They Might Be Giants

win a copy of ‘working for the man’

Earlier this week we posted some of Jeffrey Yamaguchi’s hilarious Rules of Working for the Man. Now you can win one of five copies of Working for the Man by entering our contest. Let’s break it down:

Step One: Come up with your own ‘Working for the man’-style rule.

Step Two: The rule must relate to a) assistants, and b) the holiday season. Points for snarkiness.

Step Three: Email your rule(s) to contact@savetheassistants.com. Put “workplace rules” as the subject line. The deadline is Monday, December 17 by noon EST.

Step Four: Lilit, Ashley, and Jeffrey will pick their five favorite rules and post them on STA. The winners will also get copies of Working for the Man.

Other stuff to know: you can submit as many rules as you want. Only one rule per person can win, but you can enter as many times as you want.

Good luck!
