tips for socializing when broke (or unemployed)

Lots of STA readers have written in to bemoan the fact that, due to the economy, they’ve recently gotten laid off. The blog Laid Off in NYC definitely understands your predicament. She has come up with a list of ways you can still socialize and have fun while on a (severely) limited budget. After all, you have to network in order to get your next job, right? Among her suggestions:

  • Tell everyone you’re unemployed.
That’s always good for a free sympathy drink or two. And if that fails, at least your friends will have the tact not to invite you out to really expensive places.
  • Pregame, pregame, pregame.
It’s always cheaper to get drunk at home and go out when you’re really loaded.
  • Carry cash.
Using your credit card makes it easier to forget how much you’re actually spending. It’s smart to carry a limited amount of cash with you and be super clear with yourself that you will not spend more than you have on you.
