It’s almost impossible to go a day without hearing about a round of layoffs at a media company. Conde Nast, the magazine behemoth behind titles like Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, is not immune. In addition to a hiring freeze and the recent shutdown of Men’s Vogue (it’s going from twelve issues a year to just two), other benefits are being cut around the office. According to the media column in The New York Post, “the hardworking assistants who used to be able to get the company to pay for working lunches at their desks will no longer have that luxury.”
It’s not just assistants feeling the crunch, though. Editors who used to take town cars and cabs have been asked to cut back on their use, and the unlimited subscriptions to other periodicals is now not allowed. I’m not too brokenhearted about that last bit, though–as long as people still have the internet it’s probably enough to stay current.
