Suppose your boss was going to jail. You’d probably be, happy, right? Especially if your boss was someone like William Lerach, a lawyer recently sentenced to two years in prison for accepting kickbacks. Two of the character witnesses for Lerach were his personal driver and his assistant. I know what you’re thinking–why the hell would an assistant ask a judge to take mercy on her boss? We’re not sure, and this article doesn’t provide much more information. It could be that he’s a really nice guy to work for. It could be that his assistant was paid off, or has a bitchin’ case of Stockholm Syndrome.
But here’s something else about William Lerach: he was one of the attorneys who won the class action lawsuit against Enron. Maybe he did it to enhance his fame, or maybe he’s a genuinely nice person who defends the little guy. Tough to say. Perhaps when he gets out of prison we can ask him to help us in our mission of making assistant abuse illegal.
