It’s something every New Yorker worries about–leaving his or her cell phone or BlackBerry in a cab. Sometimes, you leave your phone in a cab and the next thing you know you have $800 worth of calls to 1-900 numbers showing up on your account. Sometimes you get lucky and a nice passenger or cabbie returns the phone to you.

[The photographer, being photographed.]

The personal assistant to celebrity photographer Annie Leibowitz recently left his iPhone in a cab. And while he or she was lucky enough to get the phone back, the person who found it managed to download all of the contacts in it first. Some of the celebs whose contact info was stolen include music mogul Clive Davis, CNN correspondent Christiane Amanpour, ballet legend Mikhail Baryshnikov, and even presidential daughter Jenna Bush.

It turns out that when the mystery contact-stealer downloaded the iPhone software, he actually merged his own contact list with that of Leibowitz’s assistant. Here’s the most interesting tidbit: “The assistant, clearly an upstanding fellow, keeps notes of things like who is “nice,” who is Christian. But the gay blade who found the phone compiles somewhat more personal information about his friends. So nestled among the celebrities on the assistant’s phone are now contacts for people with names like “F— Face” and “Joey,” who is “into hung bb [bareback] tops.”

In other news, Annie Leibowitz’s assistant earns enough to have an iPhone. And is so getting fired.
